Join the American Diabetes Association in stepping out diabetes!
This year America will come together in the Fall to raise funds for Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes. A Formerly known as America Walk for Diabetes, Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes is the fund-raising walk of the American Diabetes Association (ADA). All funds raised from Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes is used in support of the Association mission: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.
Diabetes is a devastating disease that affects everyone, regardless of ethnicity. Step Out is an event for friends, families and individuals to come together and help raise money for a good cause. To date, there are nearly 24 million men, women and children with diabetes or 7.8% of the population American population. While an estimated 17.9 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately, 5.7 million people are not aware that they have the disease. At least 57 million people have pre-diabetes.
If present trends continue, one in three Americans, and 1 in 2 minorities, born in 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime. In 2007, 1.6 million new cases of diabetes were diagnosed in people age 20 years or older. Each day, approximately 4,383 people are diagnosed with diabetes. Diabetes is a leading cause of death in America, killing more people than AIDS or breast cancer combined. More than 286,000 Americans each year will die from its complications.
Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes is an event for the whole family, or for anyone who enjoys the feeling of being part of a community.
