Menopause: A Hormone Is a Hormone

In January 2008 the FDA said hormones for menopause mixed by pharmacists aren’t any safer than commercially prepared hormone replacement therapies from drug companies. Almost two years later the message is still the same. The FDA and most doctors agree ─ a hormone is a hormone regardless who makes it. For the past few years so-called bioidentical hormones have become popular by way of promise and hope. Women believe bio identical hormones are safer. However, they are receiving the same hormone they fear ─ estrogen and the risks are the same as standard hormone replacement therapies.

Un-natural remedies such as bioidentical hormones sold by pharmacists are broadcast as natural because they are derived from plants. However, the plants are chemically compounded and therefore no longer in their natural state. They are also thought to be similar to what a women’s body produces on its own. Commercial drug companies also offer bioidentical hormones. The real difference being the commercial brands are standardized (manufacturing quality control and guarantee) and the ones mixed by a pharmacist are not.

Are the risks of breast cancer, heart attack, stroke, blood clots and lung cancer the same? Yes, no, maybe. Compelling and legitimate caution is still advised. The American Cancer Society, The FDA and The Women’s Health Initiative agree the risks outweigh the benefits. It is also recommended that if you choose hormones as a treatment for menopause symptoms they should only be used for the shortest amount of time and in the lowest does possible. So what do you do when you have miserable symptoms from menopause?

Grappling with the risks and benefits of hormone replacement therapy is nothing new for women over 40. Alternative remedies have become more popular then ever with women who like to make inquiries, research and find their own solutions. They like the idea of natural treatments or natural medicine versus prescription hormone drugs. There is medical and scientific data that supports menopause symptoms can be managed out of harm's way with botanical and herbal extracts. Women have been using this method for centuries, safely and with good success. When shopping for an herbal menopause symptom relief product keep a mental checklist of what it must have:

  • High quality ingredients
  • No additive
  • Allergen free
  • Standardized manufacturing

If you are one of the 100,000 women each month that enter menopause, a natural treatment option is a good place to start. Take better care of yourself. Women live busy lives; nevertheless the only way to live a long and happy life is to age in good health and minimize your risks.
