Move to New York

As a political, cultural and economic leader in our nation, New York provides residents a spirit and energy that is difficult to match. Whether you're in the market for urban loft apartments or charming garden apartments in the countryside, New York has what it takes to be your new home. With the Adirondack Mountains to the east, Niagara Falls to the west and the hustle and bustle of the world financial capital of New York City, there is a unique contrast when it comes to New Yorker’s lifestyles and landscapes they call home.

With an estimated population of over 19 million residents, New York is the third largest state in population after California and Texas. Because a significant majority of the population is concentrated in the southern portion around New York City, the state is often regionalized into Upstate and Downstate. While the state is best known for New York City's urban atmosphere, especially Manhattan's skyscrapers, most of the state is in fact dominated by farms, forests, rivers, mountains, and lakes.

New York real estate includes everything from stunning estate properties, to cabin homes, to oceanfront houses, to cozy modern single-family homes and trendy condominiums. With the influence of New York City’s high end housing costs, New York State's overall cost of living is 20% above the national average. Statewide, the median home price is $211,900. When it comes to living in the big city, the median sales price for a Manhattan condominium is near $705,000. Upstate New York offers an easy commute to the city with a more reasonable cost of living. Other major cities such as Rochester and Utica feature plenty of amenities at an affordable quality of life. Some of these include large corporations, fine colleges, high-quality music and theater events as well as a sufficient supply of single and multi-family dwellings. Albany enjoys an overall cost of living below the national average. With a population of only about $100,000, it maintains a more neighborly feel than you might find in bigger New York cities, like NYC, Buffalo and Rochester. Housing costs are among the lowest in the western region of New York where the median home price is more affordable, around $90,000.

The New York economy is maintaining a steady pace of job growth. As the top-ranked state in the nation for the greatest number of Fortune 500 Company's Headquarters, a steady employment rate is maintained by the leading industries of business and health services. All levels of education set national standards for excellence, including ranking first in the nation for Number of Top Tier Universities in 2004. New York City dominates the economy of the state. It is the leading center of banking, finance and communication in the United States.

When it comes to weather, New York residents experience much variation from region to region. The state is split into three regions, each with a typical climate pattern. In the upland regions of the Adirondacks and the Catskills, winters are cold and summers are cool; the snowbelt of the state is one of the snowiest in the country with Buffalo averaging 92 inches of snow each year; and the southeastern region, including New York City, has the warmest tempertaures in the state and the longest season between frosts. In the autumn months, the entire state of New York experiences unparalleled beauty provided by a vibrant fall color display.
