FOX RIVER COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL is an independent, fully accredited coeducational day school serving students from pre-school through 8th grade. Located 35 miles northwest of Chicago, the school is set on 53 acres of rolling hills and field oaks overlooking the Fox River Valley. Our small class sizes, talented faculty, and beautiful setting combine to create a safe, child-centered learning community.
Our mission is to educate the whole child through a values-based curriculum, conducted in a home-like environment, combining academic excellence with individual character development.
At Fox River, we believe that children have an unlimited capacity to express goodness and intelligence. We are committed to looking for and finding each child's best nature and most expansive abilities and to encouraging each child to recognize those strengths. Small classes emphasize basic skills but also provide numerous avenues for advanced enrichment and an overall context for discovering each individual's unique potential.

Originally founded in 1913, the school recently changed its name from Chicago Junior School to Fox River Country Day School. The school is open to both boys and girls and maintains a small boarding program (10% of student body), drawing many of its students from other states and other countries around the world. Day students come from communities up and down the Fox River, including Elgin, Dundee, St. Charles, Algonquin, Crystal Lake, and Barrington. The 2002-2003 school year had 235 students in attendance. Families at Fox River Country Day represent a striking diversity of racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds.
Fox River Country Day plants and nurtures goodness by honouring qualities such as honour, fairness, kindness, and truth. Our students are encouraged to develop academically, socially, creatively, physically, morally, and spiritually - and not just in a theoretical way, but through practical and positive character building qualities. A comprehensive character development program is woven into all school activities including arts appreciation, sports, and community service.
A Fox River education fosters a respect for self and the convictions of others and a commitment to the highest ideals of democracy and citizenship. We believe that the gift of understanding carries with it a responsibility to embrace community, the environment, and the wider world with compassion, respect, and unselfish service.
The school has a resident naturalist on staff to act as the steward of the 23 acres that are registered by the state of Illinois as a Natural Heritage Landmark. Our naturalist incorporates conservation and environmental awareness into the science curriculum from pre-school through middle school.
Parents and teachers have a vital partnership role in each child's experience at the school. Working together, we seek to instil in our students a delight in discovery, an active love of learning, high personal academic standards, a loving respect for differences, inner-discipline, and a cooperative team spirit.
FOX RIVER COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL'S unique Midwest setting and our emphasis on the values of home, community, character and personal academic excellence set us apart.
