Far Brook School

Founded in 1948 and located in Short Hills, New Jersey, the Far Brook School is an independent, nonprofit, coeducational day school for approximately 220 students from Nursery through Eighth Grade. Children learn at Far Brook in a purposeful but unrushed atmosphere. They experience the security of belonging to a community whose life and work they find challenging and engaging. At Far Brook, a child’s intelligence and creativity are honored.

Far Brook School strives for academic excellence through the integration of liberal arts and sciences with the creative arts. Central to the school’s philosophy is the expectation that children are capable of intellectual depth and of meeting rigorous standards of achievement. The school’s curriculum demonstrates its belief in learning through the arts and in the concept that basic skills are acquired, retained and made relevant when taught in a rich, meaningful context.

Far Brook is unique in its inter-disciplinary approach to learning through which children receive a classical liberal arts education at an elementary school level. The program is one that stimulates curiosity and initiative in children, while fostering independence and developing the ability to think, reflect, feel and conceptualize. Teachers encourage children to approach problems in as many different ways as possible.

Far Brook’s seven and one-half acre campus features large playing fields, an arts building, meeting hall, gymnasium, library, administration building and three other buildings which encompass classrooms, a woodshop, French language room, two computer labs, and science labs. The experienced, caring staff is made up of 25 fulltime and 13 part-time faculty members. A fulltime nurse is also on staff.

To find out more about Far Brook School…

Far Brook School will be hosting two open houses, on Tuesday, October 28, and Tuesday, December 2. The focus of these morning-long programs at Far Brook will be to show interested parents the ways in which Far Brook combines an innovative curriculum of math, science, and liberal and creative arts with opportunities for individual self-development. The Open House programs begin with Morning Meeting, a distinctive feature of life at Far Brook, where the entire school gathers each day for announcements by Director Mary Wearn Wiener, student presentations, faculty readings of prose and poetry, and songs led by Music Director Allen Artz. Morning Meeting will be followed by a campus tour so that visitors can observe classes in session. The Open House will conclude with comments and a question and answer period with a panel comprised of faculty and staff members, students and parents of alumni. For information or to make reservations, call (973) 379-3442. For those unable to attend either of these programs, individual tours can be arranged.
