Randolph-Macon Academy

Randolph-Macon Academy is a coeducational college preparatory school for boarding and day students in grades 6-12 and postgraduates. Founded in 1892 and affiliated with the United Methodist Church, the school is situated on a 135-acre campus overlooking Front Royal, Virginia.

R-MA is the only co-ed boarding school in the nation that offers Air Force Junior ROTC. The military component encompasses grades 9-12, and cadets have a unique opportunity to learn to fly in school-owned aircraft. The middle school provides an interactive, structured community, with a separate campus and uniform. Both schools feature a safe, positive environment for spiritual, intellectual, athletic, and character development. Students achieve their academic potential through small classes, tutorial times with teachers, mentoring groups, and supervised study halls. The average class size is 14.

R-MA’s graduating classes average a 99% college acceptance rate. The class of 2003 earned $4 million in college merit-based scholarships, and was accepted to colleges and universities such as the Air Force Academy, Barnard, Bryn Mawr, Carnegie Mellon, Duke, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Mt. Holyoke, Smith, U.S. Military Academy (West Point), Virginia Military Institute, Virginia Tech, and the University of Virginia.

The curriculum is based on traditional liberal arts and sciences with modern and ancient languages, computer science, aerospace science, honors and advanced placement courses, and various electives. Advanced Placement and on-campus college courses are offered in a variety of subjects.

In the Middle School, students participate in the annual science fair, public speaking contests, the Virginia Mathematics League, Math Counts and the Battle of Books program. Students enjoy field trips to various museums, including the Smithsonian Institute, the Baltimore Aquarium, and the White House. Guest speakers include Civil War re-enactors, a Holocaust survivor, and representatives from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

R-MA offers an array of extracurricular activities. The speech and debate team held three championship titles in the 2002-03 school year, and was ranked #1 in Maryland and Virginia. Our marching band has performed in Michigan, Ohio, Florida, Indiana, and in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York City. The flight program allows students to solo in a Cessna 152, and perhaps earn their private pilot’s license. The chorus has performed in Florida, Virginia Beach, and at the Air Force Association’s National Convention in Washington, D.C. Students may also participate in 20 varsity sports, drama, journalism, color guard and drill teams, and the interact club.

R-MA’s summer program allows Upper School students to take new or repeat summer courses in English, math, science, social studies, foreign languages, English as a Second Language, and TOEFL preparation. Flight training, study skills, and a speech and debate camp are also offered in the summer session. Middle School students may choose from math, English, computer applications, study skills, and a reading seminar. There are also sports activities, as well as weekend cultural and entertainment trips.
