Nearly 44 million uninsured Americans. New genetic technologies. Socioeconomic inequalities and their impact on human health. Toxic agents in the environment. Obesity. Infectious disease. Health care quality and finance. Bioterrorism. The globalization of health.

These are some of the dramatic challenges confronting us today. At the University of Michigan School of Public Health, we are prepared to address such complexity. First, the school has established a network of academic research centers designed to facilitate interdisciplinary approaches to complicated problems. Second, we are launching an ambitious program to recruit a new generation of junior faculty with the potential to be tomorrow’s public health leaders and to change the way we think about health and disease. As a capstone to these efforts, we have begun a major new building project, creating a crossroads of activity that will foster innovations in research, teaching, and service.

Building upon a legacy
For more than 120 years, the University of Michigan has been a world leader in public health. With the above initiatives we begin a new era of discovery and innovation, building upon an unparalleled history and reputation in public health education and research. It was here that in 1955 Salk's polio vaccine was declared "safe, effective, and potent" after field trials with more than a million children. In early 2004, experts who battled SARS on the front lines worldwide gathered here to share lessons learned about public health preparedness. Our researchers continue to do important groundwork in the battles against influenza, asthma, youth tobacco abuse, contamination of air and water, and much more.

Our mission is to create and disseminate knowledge with the aim of preventing disease and promoting the health of populations. We are especially concerned with the poor, often minority populations, who suffer disproportionately from illness and disability. From building community gardens to working in a variety of organizations in the U.S. and around the globe, UM SPH graduates are playing major roles in efforts to create a safer, healthier world.

We invite you to join us
Courses of study at UM SPH are organized around five departments: Biostatistics, Environmental Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Health Behavior & Health Education, and Health Management & Policy and in three interdepartmental concentrations: Global Health, Reproductive and Women's Health, and Public Health Genetics. The school continues to grow as a crossroads for the biological, physical, social, and managerial sciences, where health professionals and students create integrated approaches to solving public health problems. The future of public health is here, at Michigan.
