American Studies

American Studies is a concentrated degree of study focusing on the interrelation between American politics, culture and history. This area of study is usually very liberal in structure, allowing a student to select from a wide assortment of courses that which fits their interests best. For example, one student can choose to focus on a very specific decade in American politics, whereas another student may prefer to concentrate on America's entire musical history.
Possible career paths for a graduate with an American Studies degree include the arts, education and historical fields. One graduate might find themselves a public official while another will continue study in order to become a college-level educator.
One thing to be aware of in searching for an American Studies program is the lack of consistency between each university. Some institutions may have a dedicated American Studies department where others will have a concentrated group of faculty within a larger department such as history or political science. These administrative differences will likely affect the program offered, so research carefully.
Regardless of the differences between American Studies from institution to institution, this area of study is an informative, interesting and varied look at all aspects of American life.
