At the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, a dedicated Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre has been established since 2002.With a team of experienced surgeons in this field, the most advanced equipment and proper operational protocols and guidelines, the Centre has rapidly developed into a referral, teaching and training centre in Hong Kong and the region.

Minimally invasive surgery is a technique to perform surgical procedures with the assistance of an endoscope (or a video camera) and fine instruments. The fine instruments become a surgeon's hands to effect the same magnitude of operations as in open surgery. The video camera becomes a surgeon's eyes. It transmits an image inside the abdomen onto a monitor, from which the surgeon sees directly into the patient without a large incision. Benefits include lesser amount of surgical trauma, quicker recovery, earlier discharge, less wound pain and smaller surgical scars. Minimally invasive surgical techniques are now applied to all fields of surgery.

Surgical Capabilities Elevated to New Horizons by Surgical Robotics

More recently, to further improve surgical outcomes, our Centre has acquired the advanced da Vinci® Surgical System for performing robotically-assisted surgery. The da Vinci® Surgical System has four interactive robotic arms, a high-performance vision system and proprietary EndoWrist® instruments. The surgeon's hand movements are scaled and seamlessly translated into precise movements of the robotic arms and the hand-like instruments. The video camera provides high resolution and magnification and depth perception, which expands the surgeon's view inside the patient. Surgical precision and outcomes are now beyond the limits of human hands and eyes.
