The Commonwealth Master of Public Health Program

The Commonwealth Master of Public Health Program

A consortium of Eastern Virginia Medical School, George Mason University, James Madison University, and Old Dominion University is collaborating to develop the new distance-learning Commonwealth Master of Public Health Program. This graduate education initiative is designed to strengthen the public health infrastructure in Virginia by increasing access to individuals seeking the MPH degree. The program is designed for working professionals in public and private health care institutions, community-based organizations, and the military.

Courses will be offered via distance-learning platforms, which allow students to complete the program from the convenience of their home or office. Specialty concentrations will be offered in Health Management/Policy and Health Education/Behavior, or students may select a General MPH track that provides flexibility in structuring specialty courses. Graduates will possess an understanding of the public health sciences, knowledge, and skills that are used in health care management, population-based research, and the community practice of public health.

Courses are taught by faculty from all four institutions, and may be supplemented by community faculty with expertise in specific topics. Students are expected to take 6-7 credit hours per semester, so the required 41 credit hours can be completed in two years. In addition to the required courses, students will participate in a five-day residential program conducted at the beginning of each academic year at one of the sponsoring institutions. Applications are now being accepted for admission to classes that will be offered. Detailed information about this program, including admission requirements, tuition rates, and application materials may be accessed on-line at www.CommonwealthMPH.org. You are also welcome to call (757) 446-6120 or e-mail the program at if you have additional questions.
