Michigan Tech's 6,500 students create the future in more than 120 degree programs within arts, humanities, and social sciences; business and economics; computing; engineering, forestry and environmental science, sciences; and technology. Together, faculty and students explore the boundaries of knowledge both on campus and in the beautiful Keweenaw Peninsula.
Michigan Tech is ranked in the top tier of national universities in US News & World Report's "America's Best Colleges." US News also ranks the environmental and mechanical engineering programs among the top twenty-five in the nation and ranks Michigan Tech as one of twenty-five national universities whose students finish college with the least amount of debt. Michigan Tech is also ranked a "tech powerhouse" by the Princeton Review's "Best 366 Colleges," and a Top-Ten Wired College by PC Magazine, the only university in the state to be so honored.
Unique to the Michigan Tech educational experience is the Enterprise Program. Student teams solve problems given to them by industry sponsors and have included national security, video games, spacecraft design, and international business. Students have also distinguished themselves in national competitions such as stock market investments (winning twice), concrete canoe, and RC airplane.
Michigan Tech students enjoy our 600-acre recreational forest adjacent to campus, eighteen-hole golf course, and downhill and cross-country ski areas. Downtown Houghton is just a short walk from campus and features restaurants, shops, movie theaters, coffeehouses, and more. The local area has been cited as one of the top-ten places in the nation in which to live, and its location in the north woods makes it perfect for outdoor recreation. In fact, most students remain in Houghton on the weekends, since there is so much to do, including more than 180 student organizations!
The biggest event all year, however, is Winter Carnival. Each February, students build huge snow statues, perform skits, watch NCAA Division I hockey, play broomball, and more as thousands of visitors descend on the Keweenaw Peninsula. It's another great aspect of being a student at Michigan Tech!
