Summer is a time to think outside of the box, explore new ideas, and try new experiences! You can debate the origins of the Arab- Israeli conflict, discover world cultures through the eyes of an anthropologist, or use your sociological imagination to probe social events and personal ideologies. Interested in nanoscience? Apply for an Einstein Summer Science Scholarship and spend your summer engaged in faculty-directed research. Tackle challenging issues as you consider academic options and experience college life at one of the nation’s top-ranked institutions. GW Summer Sessions offers high school students the opportunity to participate in a residential precollege program that encourages academic exploration and personal growth while discovering the historic, cultural, and educational treasures of the nation’s capital.
GW Summer Scholars offers accomplished high school juniors the opportunity to preview an authentic college experience, while earning academic credit in a first year university writing course, and an introductory course of choice. Courses are taught by GW’s distinguished faculty, which includes experts in fields such as law, politics, international affairs, education, and healthcare. In addition to accelerated learning, scholars participate in seminars that explore academic programs, learning communities, and college life. Students have the option to participate in Beyond Admissions, a weekly workshop which offers an insightful examination of the complexities of the college admissions process. Afternoons and weekends are open to recreation, field trips, and exploration of Washington, DC. Previous participants have enjoyed visits to the White House and U.S. Capitol, the Smithsonian, The World Bank, the Kennedy Center, embassies, area colleges, and other venues of national and international significance. Admission to Summer Scholars is based on an evaluation of overall academic performance, recommendations, and a personal statement.

GWorkshops are open to students who will have completed grades 9, 10, or 11, by this summer. The ten-day, noncredit workshops are highly experiential and interactive, promoting opportunities for academic investigation, applied learning and contextual exploration of issues through visits to course related sites. This summer GW offers two workshops:

Law and Evidence: Inside Criminal Law focuses on the procedural, legal, and ethical issues surrounding crime scene investigations. Students will participate in active analysis of real case studies, mock simulations, and conduct a forensic investigation, as they examine the complexities of criminal law and evidence.

Photojournalism: Media in Focus explores how the media’s visual images reflect complex cultural issues and societal values. The fundamentals of photojournalism will be examined through critical discussion and analysis of photographic images, providing context for applied learning as students use their cameras to explore Washington’s people and its rich and varied landscape.

Summer Scholars have access to GW’s top-notch recreational and academic facilities. Commuter options are available. Residential participants are housed at GW’s Mt. Vernon Campus, located in beautiful, residential Northwest Washington.
