Tucked away in Eastern America’s southern highlands lies a region steeped in heritage, rich in culture, and abundant in adventure—a land of lush mountains, rushing rivers, and undiscovered territory. Over two centuries ago, Northeast Tennessee served as the first gateway for America’s westward expansion. Its beautiful surroundings were embraced by adventurous pioneers and cherished by generations to follow.
Even today, Northeast Tennessee invites you to uncover its rich history, lively culture and welcoming people. In America’s First Frontier, everything’s ripe for discovery. This is where country music was born and where bluegrass thrives. This is the home of Revolutionary War heroes, an American President, and the first settlement west of the 13 colonies.
Most any way you turn here, a place of great history beckons the imagination. Retrace the steps of restless explorers Daniel Boone and Davy Crocket. Visit the home of the 17th President, Andrew Johnson. Experience 1791 at Rocky Mount, the headquarters of the Southwest Territory, now a living history museum. In Jonesborough, mind-spinning tales of master storytellers enrapture audiences at the National Storytelling Festival.
America's first frontier is still out there in the rolling mountains of Northeast Tennessee. Rafting the Nolichucky River takes you into the deepest gorge in the Southeast. Around here, you're never far from kayaking, hiking, back-road cycling, and totally awesome fishing. Trophy tail waters from the Watauga and Holston Rivers offer rainbow, brown and brook trout. In Kingsport, Bays Mountain is home to a 3500-acre outdoor classroom. The lake, nature center, and planetarium are framed on all sides by mountain ridges. The curious will love the Ebbing & Flowing Spring, near Rogersville. In 2 hours and 47 minutes, the spring's flow ranges from a trickle to 500 gallons per minute!
Northeast Tennessee blooms with originality, from the stages of our regional theater to friendly get-together venues where folks with banjos, guitars, mandolins and fiddles lay down some of the true soul music of the mountains. In Bristol, "The Birthplace of Country Music" set the stage for the country music recording industry and opened doors for legendary artists such as the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers. In Abingdon, a short piece up the road is Barter Theatre, celebrated State Theatre of Virginia.
At one of the nation's largest sport venues, experience the excitement of motor sports all year. Bristol Motor Speedway, the world's fastest half-mile, hosts two NASCAR races while the Bristol Dragway (known as "Thunder Valley") features numerous events. The Speedway also hosts community gatherings, outdoor concerts, a holiday light display and an ice skating rink.
