NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service

NYU Wagner prepares its students to produce results that matter on issues of public importance.

Our Vision

The Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University is reframing public service education for the 21st century. Our vision identifies public service as work of public importance wherever it happens. It recognizes that public service careers span sectors, demand role flexibility, and reflect context. We offer a broad-based and interdisciplinary education that integrates theory and practice to prepare our students to provide leadership on the critical issues of our time. We also take full advantage of our location in the most global city in the world.

Our Program

Established in 1938, NYU Wagner offers advanced programs leading to the professional degrees of:

U.S. News ranks Wagner's graduate programs #1 in Health Policy and Management, #4 in City Management and Urban Policy, #4 in Public Finance and Budgeting, #7 in Nonprofit Management, #8 in Social Policy, and #9 in Public Management/Administration.

Students pursue the MPA in Public and Nonprofit Management and Policy or Health Policy and Management with a management, policy analysis, finance, or international specialization. Urban planning students specialize in environment, infrastructure, and transportation; economic development and housing policy; or international development planning. MPA and MUP students may also explore substantive areas such as community development, social policy, nonprofit management, social entrepreneurship, international development, and education policy through elective courses at Wagner and at most of NYU's other graduate schools. One of the defining features of the MPA and MUP programs is the Capstone End Event. Over the course of an academic year, students work in teams—either to address challenges and identify opportunities for a client organization or to conduct research on a pressing social question.

Through the Master of Science in Management and Advanced Professional Certificate Programs, NYU Wagner provides mid-career professionals who have at least 5 years of progressively responsible experience an opportunity to reflect on their practice, retool with new skills, and reposition themselves for the very highest levels of public service leadership.

NYU Wagner's Doctoral Program provides students with the theoretical and methodological training needed to perform original research in public policy, management, or finance. Many students specialize in a substantive area such as health, urban policy, nonprofits, welfare, education, or international development.

Key to Wagner's vision is that we will be a transformative experience for our students. We are committed to supporting students' professional growth through an innovative career development program called Composing Your Career (CYC). CYC is a framework for students to clarify their direction, identify the knowledge and skills they need for success, gain critical experience, and reflect on their evolving career goals. Wagner graduates are prepared for leadership roles in all levels of government, nonprofits, healthcare organizations, and international NGOs.
