Northwest Academy - Portland Oregon

High School " Middle School " Arts After Hours

Located in the heart of Portland's cultural district, The Northwest Academy is a progressive, accessible, independent school (grades 6-12) providing a college-preparatory educational model to bright students who are motivated to maximize their potential in academic and arts education.

The Northwest Academy offers students programs which emphasize and value creative thinking, individual choice, academic rigor, and self-discipline, taught by master teachers and professionals active in their fields.

The Northwest Academy program is based on the research of noted educators, whose work on multiple intelligences revealed the importance of arts-infused curriculum for the benefit of all students. Visual, performing and media arts classes comprise an integral part of our program, both during the school day and after school, through The Arts After Hours program.

The Northwest Academy High School presents a college-preparatory curriculum to all students. Small class size and high quality of personal attention eliminate the need for "AP" or "IB" designations; every student receives college-preparatory training. Our graduates attend some of the finest colleges and universities in the country, including Swarthmore, Parsons School of Design, Macalester, Cal Arts, USC, Reed, Whitman and NYU.

The Northwest Academy Middle School, with its progressive approach to a crucial stage in a young learner's life, offers students a rigorous and accelerated academic program, focused on core learning skills, in an emotionally safe learning environment. Working under the close supervision of experienced teachers, students acquire critical skills in an arts-base culture of mutual respect.

The student teacher ratio in our classrooms averages 15:1. Possibly the most innovative aspect of The Northwest Academy is its proficiency-based curricular structure. Students are evaluated and placed according to their skill and knowledge, not their age. All courses in the school's program are sequential and developmental. Students know from the beginning what proficiencies they will need to master in order to proceed to the next level in the curriculum. Students may proceed through the school curricula at personal levels of challenge and achievement.
