Wooster School - independent coeducational K-12 day school

Founded in 1926 by Reverend Aaron C. Coburn, Wooster School is an independent coeducational K-12 day school, which maintains its commitment to its founding principles: Intellectual Excellence, Hard Work, Simplicity and Religion. Additionally, Wooster has a strong tradition of diversity; 25% of students receive some form of Financial Aid and 20% are represented by students of color.

Benefiting from small classes and a 7:1 student/teacher ratio, 421 students from Fairfield and Westchester Counties learn life’s lessons as they prepare for college and beyond; they discover joy in this journey along the rigorous road to becoming leaders for good in the world.

The Upper School (9-12) offers a rigorous college preparatory, liberal arts curriculum, including Honors and AP courses in the core curriculum and computer science, music and art. A year- or semester-long Study Abroad program in France or Spain affords sophomores and juniors the opportunity to develop their fluency and understanding of foreign languages and cultures. By junior year, students begin meeting weekly with College Guidance staff to explore personal, intellectual and career aspirations, and to customize a college search and application strategy. In their senior year, students complete a culminating independent study project. Wooster’s K-12 curriculum is supplemented by a social and academic Honor Code, compulsory community service, a weekly ecumenical chapel program and a founding philosophy of Self-Help, manifested in a program administered by seniors that aims to teach personal and communal responsibility through service, accountability and leadership.

Middle School (6-8) students are held to equally high standards. Academic life, which centers around a new state-of-the art 17,000 square foot edifice, emphasizes a curriculum that prepares students to become autonomous learners and well prepared for Upper School academics. They are also expected to be good citizens, to uphold the standards of the Honor Code, and to participate in Self-Help. While Middle School students engage in their own extra-curricular activities: the arts or athletics, there are opportunities for those who particularly excel to participate at the Upper School level.

The Lower School (K-5) features small classes, focused on cooperation. The curriculum integrates language arts with reasoning to develop life-long readers, writers and problem solvers. Beginning in kindergarten, students are instructed in foreign language and computer literacy. Teachers creatively combine special thematic units in core instruction with art and music to encourage students’ natural curiosity.

Anchoring the 125 acre, hillside campus is Wooster’s historic James Marshall Chapel, surrounded by 15 buildings, including a new Middle School building, library, computer lab, music and science buildings, and an art center. The Alumni and Forever Young Gymnasiums, and playing fields accommodate a variety of athletic teams during the year. The Wean Performing Arts Studio houses the popular drama department.

Providing students the opportunity to unearth hidden talents and passions, Wooster strives to strike a balance among academics, athletics and the arts. Armed with the tools for success and an appreciation for all of life’s opportunities, our students are motivated to pursue with zeal their academic, physical, spiritual, moral and aesthetic possibilities.
