The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS)

The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), an independent, not-for-profit university, was established in 1986. The goal of the sponsors was to put in place a centre of excellence that would provide rigorous academic and intellectual training and be a viable alternative to education at leading universities around the world.

LUMS currently offers programs at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels in mathematics, economics, social sciences, law, management, computer science/engineering. By 2008, the University will launch its School of Science & Engineering with programs offered at the undergraduate level with plans for graduate level programs within the next four years.

The University has made tremendous impact in the last two decades primarily be ensuring relevance of its curricula, where the effort is to stay tuned to changing needs of the local and global environment. Further, the teaching pedagogy encourages originality of thought and application of concepts to problem solving. The interactive, practically oriented, two-way class discourse inculcates in the students the ability to think on their feet and the capability to defend their ideas.

Ensuring quality in all aspects, LUMS faculty constitutes PhDs from top universities of the world with some possessing the required industry experience that helps in enriching the class experience. Further, the students are inducted through a very stringent admission process requiring high past academic performance and extremely competitive scores in tests like SAT, GMAT or GRE. Once inducted, these students have to maintain a very high performance level to complete their graduation requirements.

The breadth of the programs strengthened by building of solid theoretical background in the area of specialization, gives the graduates the edge that makes them a ready choice of employers the world over. Those opting for higher studies find admission in the top schools around the world. These include 9 Rhodes scholars in the last 12 years and 12 Fulbright Scholars in 2005.

The students actively participate in international competitions and come back with awards and accolades. Recently, a group of students won the Best Delegates Award at World MUN in China. Further there are a number of student exchange programs in place with universities like Copenhagen Business School, Asian Institute of Technology, Indian School of Business, Waseda University and others.

There is a strong research culture at LUMS with students and faculty working on various projects in collaboration with academics at Harvard, McGill, MIT and others. Recent research projects received from the industry include those received from Microsoft and CISCO. ‘RISEPAK’ is a monitoring and accountability tool for relief information, developed in response to the 2005 earthquake. This initiative, of academics from LUMS, Kennedy School of Government, Pomona College, with the help of the World Bank and NGOS, won the coveted Stockholm Challenge award for being the most innovative ICT project in the world.

The University is located in Lahore, Pakistan, a city known for its rich cultural heritage. The beautifully landscaped campus spread over a total area of 100 acres, has an environment totally conducive to learning with state of the art facilities in terms of fully equipped class rooms, library, information technology support, sports as well as student and faculty housing.
