International Schools: Europe

Becoming independent learners and international citizens:
Student perspectives on the experience of international education

Students of international schools around the world often cite their education as one of the most transformative and influential factors in their life. In a complex and changing world, students look back upon their time in school as a unique opportunity to gain the necessary knowledge, skills and dispositions for a happy, successful and ethical life beyond school. Continuing a series on the experience of international education through the eyes of students, three ISB Middle School students describe their own perspectives on this educational opportunity.

International School of Brussels ([email protected])

ISB is a truly international school, like many others across the world, through which students grow more aware of different cultures, beliefs and perspectives – yet at the same time this experience brings us closer together into one community. Being at ISB, with students and faculty from over 70 countries, we have learned to accept people, not by their appearance, but by their efforts, talents and personalities. With a wide range of sports teams travelling to various countries, students also learn not always to rely on their parents or guardians, thus showing independence and maturity.

International Citizens
Our international awareness has grown, not only from being on Campus, but from the experiences we have had by visiting several countries with sports teams as well as academic and performing arts groups.

Independent Learners
To help students become successful and independent, our teachers are helpful and supportive. They are willing to assist us with any problems we face. They teach us the fundamentals, but let us choose which path to take

Expectations are high, but achievable, which encourages us to go beyond our standards, and ultimately prepare us for the real world. The IB pass rate, just one success indicator among many, is world class and significantly higher than the worldwide average. To achieve such prestigious measures, students must show devotion, enthusiasm and self-sufficiency. It takes a lot of intrinsic motivation as well as integrity to prepare for and pass the exams.

Everyone included, everyone challenged, everyone successful
As our mission suggests, ISB is a school of acceptance and diversity. At this school, we have been taught to think about our actions and learn alongside others, as well as on our own. Being international students presents us with two goals, 1500 students, and one school.
